A Chiropractor’s Advice for Choosing the Best Mattress
Thinking About Getting a New Mattress?
While most of us associate the necessity of proper posture with activities that occur while we’re awake, good posture is just as paramount when we sleep. Because we’re largely unaware of our posture when we sleep, however, our mattress choice is of the utmost importance.
With that said, finding the right mattress for you can often times be a tedious task, especially if you sleep with a partner who has different sleeping preferences.
Further, from a general public health standpoint, it’s true that there isn’t one mattress type that fits all. Instead, depending on your preferences and physiological needs, differing mattress types suit different individuals differently!
On the contrary, from a chiropractic standpoint, and as it pertains to back/spinal pain & discomfort, there does happen to be a superior mattress type. That superior mattress type? Firm…
At Chawla Chiropractic, we place much of our effort on rehab and treatment of injuries. However, we place just as much emphasis on the prevention of such injuries so that our clients never have to experience the repercussions. Similarly, because back pain and spinal impairments are one of the most common reasons for a chiropractic visitation, we place even greater emphasis on your mattress type.
Why Firm Mattresses are the Best for Spine Health
While we all have our preferences for what we find comfortable, there does happen to be a superior choice of mattress when it comes to the health of our spine. That superior choice? A firm mattress.
A firm mattress provides great stability and support, ultimately helping align the spine while you sleep. In addition, it also prevents your body from sinking into the mattress itself, thus avoiding suboptimal sleeping positions throughout the night; more on the importance of sleeping positions shortly…
Although more research certainly needs to be done on the subject, the studies that have been completed to date clearly suggest that a medium-firm or firm mattress is optimal for spinal alignment and preventing early onset back pain.
Not only does it help maintain an equal weight distribution throughout the body’s muscles, bones, and ligaments, thus avoiding unnecessary pressure on any one area of the body (i.e. the spine, neck, etc.), but as a result, also provides a safe sleeping ground for achieving a neutral position throughout the night.
Finally, while it’s important to invest in a high-quality firm mattress, or at the very least, a medium-firm mattress, it means nothing without proper sleep positioning. While we won’t go into detail in this article on what a healthy sleeping position looks like, it can’t be stressed enough the importance… For starters, consider investing in a few quality pillows as well!
