How to Minimize Back Pain at the Office

The relevancy of this topic is undeniable for the majority of those reading this article likely work a 9-5 desk job that requires copious amounts of sitting. While this isn’t inherently a bad thing, it can certainly become one…

As we’ve come to learn, sitting all day does not bold well for physical health, more often than not resulting in a myriad of health issues and musculoskeletal aches and pains. This is especially true when proactive measures aren’t implemented to mitigate such ailments from developing.

From a chiropractic standpoint, those who live a sedentary lifestyle, in large part due to the nature of their work, take up a large portion of our clientele, and for obvious reasons.

While here at Chawla Chiropractic we prioritize rehabilitation and treatment measures, we place just as much emphasis on providing proactive recommendations for the prevention of pain and injury. Because the office is where much of the pain and discomfort develop, what follows are several recommendations for optimizing your office space to minimize and/or prevent such pain from occurring…

How to Minimize Office-Derived Back Pain

While you might presume otherwise, minimizing back pain at the office can be quite simple and easy. With just a couple of the following implementations, you can almost immediately begin to experience a reduction in back pain, or even better, prevent it altogether.

Create an Ergonomic Office Environment

Ergonomics is the basis of any off-based pain prevention strategy, and for good reason. Not only does a carefully-curated ergonomic environment promote good posture, but as a result, also does wonders for eliminating or reducing pain/discomfort.

Whether it’s investing in an ergonomic office chair, a standup desk, or simply making a few adjustments to your monitor height, desk or chair height, and arm position, you can almost immediately begin to experience relief.

As a great byproduct, you’ll also likely experience an uptick in productivity!

Take Quick but Frequent Breaks

For those who work in an office or at-home desk, it’s unavoidable the act of sitting for long periods. And that’s okay, it’s simply a part of life for the majority of society trying to make a living.

The good news is that you’re not glued to your chair! In fact, recent research has shown that taking several sporadic breaks throughout the workday might just increase work productivity.

With that said, take advantage of this literature and do it for your mental and physical health. By simply implementing frequent breaks throughout your day, even if it’s just 2-5 minutes at a time, immediate benefits can be experienced.

What do you do during these quick breaks? Simple! Go for a short walk, stand up and stretch, grab a glass of water, meditate, and/or reset your posture… This simple act will do wonders for office-derived back pain.
