Importance of Footwear on Spine Health
Footwear on Spine Health
While some might deem footwear as a simple fashion statement, it’s actually much more important than that, especially in the eyes of a chiropractor.
If you’re someone who experiences some level of back pain, knee pain, ankle pain, or any type of joint pain for that matter, you might want to take a step back (pun intended) and assess the quality of footwear that you’re choosing to wear on a daily basis. We are your Danvers Chiropractor afterall!
Why? Because it just might be the root cause of all your physical ailments…
With that said, in what follows, we’ll be discussing the importance of footwear, particularly on one’s spine health, and how changing your footwear can make a dramatic difference in the health and well-being of your body at large.
A Chiropractic Perspective on Footwear
From a chiropractic standpoint, the choice of your footwear comes down to its ability to fit in well within the function of the kinetic chain. What do we mean by this? Simply put, your kinetic chain is what allows for the free flow of joints, particularly in the lower extremity.
Because your footwear is worn at the bottom of the kinetic chain (i.e. on your foot/ankle), it’s heavily relied upon as the base of all lower limb movement. When we wear unsuitable footwear, our kinetic chain is at greater risk of being out of alignment, ultimately resulting in muscle imbalances, joint pain, stiffness, tightness, or worse, injury.
In order to mitigate this issue, then, you must choose the proper footwear, not only to prevent calf strains and joint pain but to ensure that such symptoms don’t travel up through the spine resulting in chronic back pain and beyond.
Final Word of Advice
As important as footwear is to your physical health, it’s not necessary to make a hefty investment in a pair, or pairs of shoes, nor is it particularly necessary to seek out orthotics as other chiropractors and doctors might recommend.
Instead, consider getting a professional assessment on what kind of foot you have and what type of footwear is most suitable for said type. Next, get a proper sizing of your foot; you’d be surprised at how many people wear shoes that are too big or too small on them…
