Joint Pain & Weather: Chiropractic Care Can Help!

Changes in Weather and Joint Pain

Have you ever heard of the notion that your joints can predict the weather? An old adage that might outdate most of you reading this, however, is potentially valid to a degree…

While it might sound outlandish, many who experience arthritic pain or general physiological discomfort attribute it to the change in weather patterns. In other words, on days when it’s cold, rainy, or humid, for example, reports of pain increase dramatically.

The question, however, is whether or not this hypothesis has any validity or if it’s simply a false notion that might have origins elsewhere. In what follows, we seek to find out! What you’ll come to learn is that while from a chiropractic standpoint it might sound impossible, it might just be true, especially for those with chronic joint pain…

Let’s get right into it!

How Weather Changes Trigger Pain

Whether it’s cold weather or humid weather, it’s a scientific fact that it can have an impact on the health of our joints. Here’s how… When the air pressure changes, there’s more or less air pressing on our bodies; this is otherwise known as barometric pressure.

The result is often joint swelling, inflammation, and tissue enlargement. For those already living with chronic pain, these weather-related side effects will only exacerbate the problem.

Withstanding this fact, there are also endless anecdotal reports of individuals with arthritis, for example, feeling an increased level of discomfort during shifts in weather patterns. If this sounds like you, not all is lost.

From a physiological and chiropractic standpoint, several remedies can mitigate this problem. Such remedies include stretching, massage therapy, chiropractic care, and movement (i.e., exercise).

Other ways to relieve weather-related pain include dressing for the temperature (i.e. remaining warm during temperature drops), anti-inflammatory remedies, and any other form of activity that improves mobility.

Contrary to popular belief, weather changes and their impacts on joint pain do hold some validity, although more research certainly needs to be done on the matter before conclusively suggesting its association. Nevertheless, we can’t ignore the abundance of anecdotal responses.
